STACHE BASH (curated by Samer Fouad)

Make your grandfather proud this August 14th and come out and sport your
mustaches at Index’s ‘Stache Bash, a one night show curated by Samer Fouad.
Artists will be showing work based around societies oldest facial hair style… The Mustache.
All work will be up for sale. We want all the art to sell so no art will be priced over 100 dollars.
Ladies and Gentlemen, this is a Mustache Party so please come sporting your mustaches and/or fake staches.

Submit your proposals, jpeg images, or video links to shamefuldesigns@gmail.com

All work must incorporate a mustache in some shape or form and must not be priced over $100.

The cut will be 50% for the artist and the other 50% supports the Index Art Center

Please write “Stache Bash” in the subject line.

We would like to invite you to an evening of wonderful food, drinks, music, and merriment. Please join us for this unique fund raising event, we can really use your help! We would very much like to continue bringing you the caliber of exhibitions we have been able to execute in the past. To help us meet our financial goals, all you need to do is join us for a barbecue dinner.

The Second Shoestring Benefit will take place on Sunday, July 11 at 6:00 pm.

Most artists lament the fact that the industry of art is a behemoth of who knows who, how much you sell for and if you get to show at all. But they are forced to throw their arms in the air and surrender to the reality “that’s the way it is”, because they hope for that golden ring of notoriety, respect and the elusive success that comes with being an artist, and dare not rock the boat. But who built the boat in the first place? Who gets to decide who sails the sea in a luxury suite, and who gets to toil below decks shoveling coal making the monster chug along…in a word, curators. These titans of good taste and the marketplace, sit themselves up above the actual creator and decide like modern day “Solomons” who gets to enter into the holy of holies and who’s relegated to anti-rooms, left to pace and question themselves and their worth. Well we say…. F*#CK CURATORS!
This is neither a rebel yell nor an exhausted cry of the downtrodden artist; it’s a fact of the time and place we find ourselves as urban artisans.
If a gallery can’t see past its own bottom line… F*#CK CURATORS!
If a curator completely ignores the creative process and its place in an installation… F*#CK CURATORS!
If a gallery rather blame the artist for lack of skill rather than promote, market and take the time to produce a note worthy show… F*#CK CURATORS!
F*#CK CURATORS! we’ll just do it ourselves! We’re the ones who created the idea, had the vision, and executed it in its present form, so we should be the stewards of its conception as an exhibit.
In the end the work should speak for itself, and if it still falls flat, well then F*#K You!

Artwork selected for inclusion in the show explores the nature of objects in which the absence of materials is a key component in the art-making process. By focusing on a lack or subtraction of materials, viewers are called to question the nature of art that derives its meaning from absent forms rather than those that are present. In addition, all artworks are monochromatic. This neutral palette will enhance the interplay between the artwork and the physical space of the gallery itself – blurring the line between perceived and tangible spaces.

Index Art Center, Newark NJ, in collaboration with the Brick City Bike Collective;

Art Cycle: An exhibition of bicycle inspired art.

Marcel Duchamp created his most famous “Readymade” Bicycle Wheel in 1913.
Over the last century the influence of the bicycle on art is as diverse and far reaching as the two wheel machine itself.
Bikes have been used as kinetic sculptures, muses for painters and photographers, and as a blank canvas for artists and innovators alike. This exhibition hopes to capture the spirit of the bicycle, and its place in contemporary art.

Brick City Bicycles is a community-based bike shop and non-profit organization that works with young people and adults from the greater Newark area. IAC will be working with Brick City Bicycles to promote special events, free rides and meetings.
